How to know if homeschooling is right for YOU! (start here)

So You Think You Want to Homeschool? (Start Here)

Before you order that curriculum or color-code your schedule — let’s have a real conversation.

I'm Alyssa — a homeschooling mom of three — and when we first started, I had no idea what I was doing. No fancy lesson plans. No Charlotte Mason Pinterest board. Just a strong pull in my heart… and a million questions.

If that’s you right now, I made this post (and this entire series) for you.

You’re not behind.
You’re not crazy.
And no — you don’t need to replicate a classroom to do this well.

So let’s start with the question beneath the question…

Why Are You Even Considering This?

Homeschooling isn’t just about education. It’s about your entire lifestyle.

Are you looking for more peace?
More flexibility?
A way to protect your family culture or slow things down?

Those reasons matter.
Even if you can’t fully explain them yet — that pull in your heart is still a valid starting point.

Your why is what will anchor you on the hard days.
And yes… there will be hard days.

Let’s Clear Up the Biggest Misconception

Homeschooling is not school-at-home.

You are not chained to a desk.
You do not need to teach six subjects for seven hours a day.
You do not need a teaching degree, a chalkboard wall, or a morning basket with linen dividers (unless you want one 😉).

It can look like:

  • Baking bread while talking about measurements

  • Cutting pizza to practice fractions

  • Reading aloud while folding laundry

  • Digging in the garden for a hands-on science lesson

  • Having your best conversations right before bed

Learning becomes a part of life — not a separate event. And that’s the beauty of it.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

This part is so important: You don’t have to know everything to begin.

You can start small.
You can learn as you go.
You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing.

There are resources.
There are mentors.
There are communities who will remind you: You’ve got this.

Because the most important thing your child needs isn't a perfect curriculum...
It's you — a parent who’s present, curious, and willing to walk with them.

For the Mom Who’s Unsure

If you're scared — that’s okay.
If you're excited but overwhelmed — welcome to the club.
You don’t need confidence to begin. Just willingness.

There’s no shame in wondering if you’re “qualified” for this.
But let me say this with my whole heart:

If you feel called to homeschool, even in the quietest, messiest, most uncertain way — that calling matters. And it’s worth listening to.

The Moment That Changed Everything

There’s something I didn’t expect when we started this journey.

It’s the joy of slowing down.
Of pressing pause when they need a break.
Of celebrating their first sentence read all the way through — and knowing I got to be there for that moment.

Not a teacher.
Not a test score.
Not someone else.

Me. Their mama.

I’ve cheered, cried, and prayed my way through this path. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

What’s Coming Next

This series is here to walk you through the real questions people ask:

  • What about socialization?

  • How do I teach multiple kids?

  • What curriculum should I pick?

  • And maybe most importantly… is this even right for me?

If any of those are on your mind — stay close. I'm going to walk you through each one with honesty and grace.
